The incident took place in Southampton around 2:10 a.m., Thursday, July 14.
Southampton Town Police 911 was contacted by a woman saying her companion was missing after attempting to swim across the Shinnecock Canal, said Lt. Susan Ralph, of the Southampton Police.
The man, identified as John Escorcia-Arroyo, age 22, of Westhampton, left the Dream Night Club and jumped into the inlet, Ralph said.
The woman lost sight of him after a few minutes. She attempted to locate him on her own for several minutes and then contacted the police, Ralph added.
Southampton Town patrol units responded and requested additional resources including from bay constables, the fire marshal's office, the US Coast Guard, and the Hampton Bays Fire and Sea Fire departments.
Southampton Town bay constables and Coast Guard officials are continuing the search for Escorcia-Arroyo at this time.
